About the museum
The museum was founded in 1968 by the Union des préhistoriens, archéologues et amateurs d’art de la Drôme et du Haut-Comtat. It displays collections from the commune of Nyons and the western Baronnies, from prehistory (Middle Paleolithic) to the Middle Ages.
The display follows a red thread, “Cuisine et échanges en Baronnies” (“Cooking and exchange in the Baronnies”): each showcase evokes the food preparation of its time and objects that came from afar, such as obsidian tools from Italy. Excavations in 2001 revealed the “oldest village in Nyons”, inhabited by farmers around 5,500 years ago. Notable pieces include Gallo-Roman tableware found at Dieulefit, a Roman double sarcophagus and a 14th-century parchment relating to the Roman bridge of Nyons.
A working library holds several hundred books on the history and archaeology of the region. The museum is currently closed for a complete inventory.
