About the museum
The museum is located on the site of Notre-Dame d’Aubune in Beaumes-de-Venise. The neighbouring chapel is a 12th-century Romanesque building whose bell tower is listed as a monument historique. Tradition links it to Charles Martel or one of his lieutenants, in memory of a Frankish victory over the Saracens, and a legend tells of a rock that the devil wanted to throw at it.
The museum displays archaeological objects from the Greek, Roman, Gallo-Roman and medieval periods, all found in Beaumes-de-Venise, as well as geological objects. The periods covered range from the Palaeolithic to the Middle Ages, including the Neolithic and the Bronze Age.
Tours are led by volunteers from the Académie de Beaumes-de-Venise. They also cover the medieval garden, the spring gallery and the exterior of the chapel, which is temporarily closed.
