About the museum
The museum is housed in the Hôtel Fouquet, a town mansion built in 1610 by François Fouquet, a notable of Château-Gontier from a wealthy family of Angevin origin. A carved pine cone above the pediment of the doorway recalls the squirrel, the emblem of this family. The town bought the mansion, and the museum opened there in 1868 to present the bequest of Aristide Boullet-Lacroix, an art lover born in the town.
Over the centuries the collections grew through gifts and bequests, which were numerous in the 19th century. They include Greek and Latin antiquities, French, Italian and Dutch paintings, works linked to local history and many decorative objects. The museum also shows works on deposit from the Louvre and the Fonds national d’art contemporain.
One room is devoted to the works of Pierre Logé, an art lover who bequeathed in 1998 a collection of more than 200 paintings, sculptures and animal bronzes. The museum has held the “Musée de France” designation since 2003.
