About the museum
Robert Tatin was born in Laval in 1902. He first ran a building company, then became a ceramicist in Paris after the Second World War. In 1950 he spent five years in South America, where he studied ceramics in Brazil. His work won a first prize at the São Paulo Biennial in 1951.
After returning to France, he settled in Cossé-le-Vivien, in the Mayenne, in 1962, at the age of sixty. For more than twenty years, with the help of his wife Lise, he transformed his house and land into a vast sculptural and colorful work, which he called an “archisculpture”. He lived there until his death in 1983.
The site is now visited as a museum. An avenue of nineteen large statues in painted concrete, the Allée des Géants, leads to the entrance. Inside, a guardian dragon and bas-reliefs inspired by myths from East and West surround a meditation garden. Rooms display the artist's paintings, ceramics, drawings and textiles. The gardens, covering more than six hectares, include a labyrinth of around 600 hornbeams planted in 2009.
The house received the “Maison des illustres” label from the Ministry of Culture in 2012, and the archisculpture has been protected as a historic monument since January 2022. The museum is run by the Mayenne Departmental Council.
