About the museum
The Huningue museum is run by the Société d’histoire de Huningue, Village-Neuf et de la région frontalière. It is housed in a former fortress administration building, nicknamed the “Casino”, near the old parade ground. The collections date back to 1951, when Lucien Kiechel acquired in Switzerland a set of prints and documents relating to Huningue; donations and purchases later enriched them. The society states that the museum has occupied the building since 1979.
The route traces the history of the fortress built by Vauban on the Rhine border and of its three sieges, in 1796, 1814 and 1815. Models, plans, prints, portraits and letters patent bring to life the military life of the stronghold and its defenders, among them General Barbanègre. Other documents evoke the Revolution, the garrison town, the industrial town and episodes of the two World Wars.
The museum also displays weapons, uniforms and armour, costumes, craft tools and objects of religious and communal practice. Views of the former imperial fish farm of Huningue-Blotzheim, the Landskron castle and the Michelfelden farmstead (cense) complete the collection. The museum’s garden, modelled on a French garden, lies alongside.
