About the museum

The Kulturstiftung Basel H. Geiger was founded in 2018 by the artist and patron Sibylle Piermattei-Geiger (1930–2020) together with her husband Rocco Piermattei. It is named after the pharmacist and entrepreneur Hermann Geiger, the founder's grandfather. The foundation does not see itself as a grant-making foundation but mainly pursues self-initiated projects.

Its aim was to create a new forum for art and artists in Basel, with room for exhibitions outside the concepts of established institutions. Its programme is intended to complement Basel's museums and galleries without competing with them.

The exhibition spaces and office are located on the ground floor of a former micromotor factory on Spitalstrasse, opposite the University Hospital and close to the Rhine. During the gentle renovation, the architects Christ & Gantenbein preserved the industrial charm of the rooms, which cover around 500 square metres. Three exhibitions are shown each year, with current political or cultural references. Admission is free, and a free publication for visitors accompanies each exhibition.
