About the museum
The museum was founded in 1983 by the Société de médecine, chirurgie et pharmacie de Toulouse, a learned society established in 1801. It was first housed in the Hôtel d'Assézat, which hosts several learned societies. In 1991 it moved to the Hôtel-Dieu Saint-Jacques to make room for the Fondation Bemberg, and it has since occupied the Viguerie wing, which it shares with the Musée des instruments de médecine des hôpitaux de Toulouse.
The Hôtel-Dieu Saint-Jacques is a former medieval hospital on the left bank of the Garonne, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1998. The museum displays paintings, sculptures and antique medical instruments that trace Toulouse's medical history over more than seven centuries, organised around two themes: the teaching of medicine and surgery, and the history of Toulouse's hospitals and care. It seeks to combine historical, scientific and technical aspects with the artistic side of medical practice, and to preserve a heritage that had long been scattered.
