About the museum

The museum was founded in 1926 by former servicemen of Harnes. In 1969 the town bought the property of the former mayor, deputy and senator André Deprez, who died in 1900; in 1971 the house was made available to the association Les Amis du Vieil Harnes. The military collections gathered by the veterans were then brought together with archaeological objects found at various sites in the town.

The museum has become a place of memory devoted to the two World Wars and to archaeology. Five rooms recall the harsh occupation about ten kilometers behind the front in 1914–1918 and the repression of the Resistance during World War II; these include a room on the Resistance and one on deportation. Three archaeology rooms present Harnes's Gallo-Roman and medieval past. A library of historical works and archives are open to teachers and students.

The museum has held the “Musée de France” label since 2005 and is run by the association Les Amis du Vieil Harnes. Since summer 2012 it has been partly renovated thanks to European funds from the Transmussites 14-45 program, with new exhibition rooms and a reception area that ensures access for visitors with reduced mobility.
