About the museum
Since 1981, the Diderot school site in Harnes has testified to residents' attachment to their mining roots and to public schooling. The “Classe 1900”, created by people attached to public education, officially opened for the 1981–1982 school year. Over the years, the museum added a teaching classroom with a large collection of materials and an audiovisual room displaying hundreds of class photographs.
Mining also has its place here: in the basement, former miners have recreated their world. After the lamp room, visitors walk through a gallery about a hundred meters long. The geology room, the Telegrisoumétrie-Télévigile room and the occupational diseases room continue the tour, before the “Café d'el fosse” and the miner's family kitchen.
The tours are led by a team of volunteer guides, who recall in particular the 9/17 and 21/22 pits of Harnes.
