About the museum

The museum occupies the former town hall of Rueil-Malmaison, built from 1868 for mayor Adrien Cramail. After a new town hall was built at the end of the 1970s, the building became a local history museum, which opened its doors on February 20, 1982. It holds the “Musée de France” label and belongs to the City.

The collections come from the town's holdings and from deposits by the Société historique de Rueil. They are presented by theme and trace the development of the town, from its medieval origins under Charles the Bald to the modern era. Notable items include a large painting by Maurice Orange, “Bonaparte en Égypte contemplant la momie d'un Roi,” and a room devoted to the inventor Édouard Belin, creator of the belinograph.

A room opened in May 2016 displays a mummy from the Ptolemaic period, discovered in 2000 during a municipal waste collection. It belonged to a girl named Ta-Iset, who died at the age of four or five. The room explains embalming techniques, ancient Egyptian funerary beliefs and the “mummy-mania” of the 19th and 20th centuries. The museum also organizes temporary exhibitions every year.
