About the museum
The museum is devoted to La Grenouillère, a 19th-century bathing and dance establishment on the Seine, between the island of Croissy and the Île du Chiard in Chatou. From 1858 two floating barges housed a café-dance hall and bathing cabins. In 1869 Monet and Renoir painted side by side on this site and left several famous canvases. A fire destroyed the barges in 1889, and the site disappeared in 1928 when the branch of the Seine was widened.
The museum tells this story and that of popular leisure on the banks of the Seine in the Belle Époque: boating, cold-water bathing and the Thursday evening dance. It is housed in the Espace Chanorier in Croissy-sur-Seine and also shows a film on the history of the site.
The collections include prints by caricaturists and illustrators, paintings by artists of the Seine banks, copies of the canvases by Monet and Renoir, as well as posters and objects from life at the guinguette. Between temporary exhibitions, the museum offers a walk through its permanent collections.
