About the museum

The museum grew out of the passion of Francis Loubès, who from 1980 onward searched out and restored furniture and objects from the communal schools of earlier times. He founded the Musée de l'École association and set up the museum in the former communal school of the Cité, at 3 rue du Plô.

The City of Carcassonne took over the museum in 2009; since September 1, 2009, it has been attached to the city's Musée des Beaux-Arts.

The route has six rooms showing the atmosphere of school under the Third and Fourth Republics: blackboards, desks, inkwells, maps, bouliers (counting frames) and projection equipment. Two classrooms are reconstructed, and the writing room lets visitors try the pen with violet ink. A play room offers construction toys and drawing materials, and the library holds school textbooks from the late 19th century to the present day. Each year a temporary exhibition enriches the permanent route.
