About the museum
The Musée-trésor de Notre-Dame de l'Abbaye was formed mainly from existing collections of the diocese and of the major and minor seminaries of Carcassonne. It brings together what had escaped the confiscations of the Revolution and the 1905 laws on the separation of Church and State; some confiscated objects were returned in the years after the separation.
The collections include liturgical objects, manuscripts, incunabula from the old holdings of the major seminary's library, and liturgical vestments. Many donations from private individuals and religious congregations have been added, along with purchases made over roughly the last fifty years.
The museum is located in the Notre-Dame de l'Abbaye complex, the oldest place of worship in the town. According to the tourist office, Pope Urban II came here on June 11, 1096, to bless the construction of the Saint-Nazaire cathedral in the Cité.
