About the museum
The museum is located inside the IN2P3 Computing Centre, a national CNRS facility that processes data from major physics experiments. It reflects CNRS’s commitment to preserving its computing heritage and presents itself as one of the few initiatives of this kind in France.
Using panels and interactive displays, it traces the history of computing, from the first calculating machines to the cloud, including the first personal computers. It shows how computing techniques designed for science have evolved, and how physicists’ needs have driven technologies that are now widespread.
The route also looks at the challenges of the pioneering period of microcomputing, as well as the birth of the first French web server on the Doua campus in Villeurbanne. The museum regularly receives school groups.
