About the museum
The museum occupies a former chapel, Notre-Dame du Val, protected as a historic monument. The Tilly 1944 association aims to promote the historical heritage of the commune and in particular this museum.
The route recounts the Battle of Tilly-sur-Seulles, a little-known episode of the Battle of Normandy. In June 1944, the British 30th Corps clashed with German troops there. According to the museum, the village was taken and retaken 23 times in just under a month, was about 70% destroyed and lost roughly a tenth of its inhabitants.
Display cases and explanatory panels show how the fighting unfolded, but also the German occupation, Allied bombing and the lives of civilians during those weeks.
