About the museum
The Musée Mémorial de la Bataille de Normandie opened in 1981 in Bayeux, the first town in mainland France to be liberated, on 7 June 1944. It is part of the town's memory hub, called Liberty Alley, near the war correspondents' garden and the British military cemetery.
Over about 2,300 m², the route follows the Normandy campaign in chronological order, from 7 June to 29 August 1944. After an introduction to the Landings, the military operations are presented one by one, with display cases devoted to Allied and German soldiers and their equipment: weapons, vehicles, uniforms, archive photographs and maps of the Allied advance.
The museum belongs to the City of Bayeux, which also runs the Musée de la Tapisserie de Bayeux and the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire Baron Gérard. An archive film, a large diorama of the Falaise-Chambois Pocket and a selection of objects, “Un objet, une histoire”, complete the visit.
