About the museum
The museum was founded in 1980 with the creation of the association Les Amis du Patrimoine de Plougastel. In 1985 the commune bought the Maison Nicolle, intended to become the Maison du Patrimoine. The museum was extended in 1990 and fully opened in 1991. From 1995 it was called Musée de la Fraise et du Patrimoine; since 2024 it has been known as the Musée du Pays Plougastel. Since 2018 it has been one of the three houses of the Geopark Armorique.
Brest Métropole funded and managed a renovation lasting about twenty months, between 2024 and 2026. The museum reopened on August 1, 2026, with an entirely new, more playful and accessible display across seven rooms. It now shares its entrance with the tourist information desk of the Brest terres océanes tourist office.
The route follows the peninsula from its origins to the present day, guided by a figure from Mary Piriou’s “Procession à Plougastel”. It covers flax and the strawberry, introduced to Plougastel by Amédée-François Frézier, the gallery of traditional costumes, and the interior of a Plougastel house, with its rites and customs. Every room has hands-on elements, and one space is reserved for temporary exhibitions.
