About the museum

The museum occupies the Château de Brest, a fortress overlooking the roadstead and the Penfeld. A Roman fort already existed here in late antiquity; the site then passed to the dukes of Brittany, the English and finally France. Vauban turned it into a citadel after 1683, and the French Navy has occupied it since 1945.

The museum’s collections were attached to the Musée de la Marine in Paris in 1947. They moved into the Tours Paradis in 1958 and, after the Navy archives left in 1985, expanded into the keep and the Tour Madeleine. The latter was restored between 2020 and 2022.

The displays tell the story of the Navy and its close ties with Brest. Highlights include the Canot de l’Empereur, the figurehead of the frigate Pandore, the coat of arms of the frigate of the Lapérouse expedition, and models of a submarine and a trimaran. The museum holds the “Musée de France” label.
