About the museum
The Musée de la Laub occupies the former common house of Bischwiller, built in 1665 under Duke Christian II of Birkenfeld-Bischwiller. The building remained a central place in town life until the 20th century. It became the town hall in 1912, then housed the fire brigade until 1986.
Part of the collections was assembled by Henri Baumer (1876–1968), a local historian and craftsman. The Association des Amis du Musée de la Laub was founded in 1978. Since 2011, the cultural department of the City of Bischwiller has managed the museum and the Maison des Arts.
The first floor is devoted to the textile industry, which shaped the town’s identity from the 17th century into the early 21st, first with woollen cloth and then with jute. Visitors see carding combs, spinning wheels, shuttles and a steam engine, as well as the trades of spinner, weaver, warper and cloth maker, from raw fibre to finished product. The second floor traces local history from prehistory to the 20th century: archaeological remains, the founding of the town, the Lordship of Deux-Ponts, the castle, religious history, and social and cultural life in the 19th and 20th centuries.
