About the museum
The Musée alsacien de Haguenau was founded in 1972 and is housed in the town's former medieval chancellery. Across three levels, it presents Alsatian culture through utilitarian and decorative objects, mainly from the 17th to the 19th century.
Costumes and headdresses, painted furniture, religious images, ceramics and craftsmen's tools tell the story of rural Alsace and its beliefs. The clothing reveals where its wearers came from, their religion or social standing, and the images accompany the major stages of life.
The route includes reconstructed living rooms of a typical house from northern Alsace and a room devoted to traditional clothing, which serves as a regional reference for the history of textiles. A reconstructed potter's workshop displays glazed kougelhopf moulds and baeckeoffe dishes from Soufflenheim, as well as salt-glazed stoneware from Betschdorf.
