About the museum
After the Second World War, a group of Troyes industrialists launched a major collection drive for knitwear items. Donations of machinery and documents followed, and the museum took shape with the support of the Association des Amis du Musée de la Bonneterie, under the responsibility of curator Marguerite Dubuisson. A first opening took place in 1948, followed by others as the museum expanded and new displays were installed.
The museum is housed in the Hôtel de Vauluisant in the centre of Troyes, which it shares with the Musée de la Renaissance en Champagne. It now offers a historical overview of knitwear, the town’s most emblematic activity, which made Troyes a European city of knitwear.
The route runs from wooden knitting frames to the sophisticated machines of the golden age of the 19th and 20th centuries. It also shows knitted items (stockings, socks, jerseys, underpants) in which technique and aesthetics meet, as well as brands and archives from the great era of Troyes knitwear.
