About the museum

The collections of the Musée de la Renaissance en Champagne have the same origin as those of the Musée des Beaux-Arts et d’Archéologie in Troyes. The Société académique de l’Aube founded the Troyes museum in 1831 in the former Saint-Loup abbey. It initially gathered works seized during the Revolution, then numerous gifts, bequests and acquisitions. The City received these collections in 1945 and the museum became municipal.

Because the collections are very large, they are spread across two buildings. In 1949, the Hôtel de Vauluisant received the collections devoted to 16th-century art, with paintings and sculptures showing the flowering of religious art in Troyes and Champagne at that time.

The Hôtel de Vauluisant is one of the rare buildings made of so-called Troyes stone (pierre de Troyes). Its turreted pavilion, built around 1550 by Antoine Hennequin, has a Renaissance façade rich in pediments, cartouches and garlands. The wing at right angles dates from the 17th century and was built by the Mesgrigny family. The route shows the transition from Gothic to the more refined aesthetic of the Renaissance through painted panels, statues and stained glass.
