About the museum
The Musée de la Mine, de la Verrerie et du Chemin de fer d'Épinac is devoted to the economic history of the town and its surroundings. It is located in the vaulted cellar beneath the town hall and displays photographs, tools and objects related to mining, the railway and glassmaking.
Coal mining in Épinac began in the 18th century and expanded in the 19th century with the railway line linking the town to Pont-d'Ouche. A glassworks also made wine bottles and employed children from the age of twelve before it closed in 1931. After the nationalization of the mines in 1946, the last mine, Veuvrottes, closed in 1966, and the miners moved to the mines of Montceau.
The exhibition recalls this industrial past through the tools of the miner, the railway worker and the glassmaker, as well as pieces of glassware. A move of the museum to the former station near the Puits Hottinguer has been discussed, but the present display remains in the town hall cellar.
