About the museum
The museum occupies the site of the former Saint-Nicolas-Saint-Éloi hospital in Autun, of which only the 12th-century Romanesque chapel remains, listed as a monument historique. It was founded in 1861 and presents itself as a 19th-century Romantic museum, arranged around a small cloister and a garden.
The collections bring together architectural elements and sculptures found in Autun, the ancient Augustodunum: capitals, columns, cornices, fragments of monuments, mosaics and sarcophagi. A gallery displays about a hundred Gallo-Roman funerary stelae. In the chapel, a fresco of Christ Pantocrator recalls the medieval period. The municipal museum has held the Musée de France label since 2003.
