About the museum

In the 19th and 20th centuries, Escaudain was a town that lived between a still very present agricultural world and an industrial life based on coal and steel. The museum reflects this dual identity through objects, models, costumes and archives.

According to the museum’s presentation sources, the association Les Amis du Musée was founded in 1970 and the museum opened in 1978 in the commune’s former town hall. Its first curator, André Lebon, worked there as a volunteer for about 25 years. The museum has held the Musée de France label since 2003.

The first floor is devoted to mining and to iron and steel, with wooden mine models, lamps, tools, safety equipment, documents and photographs. The second floor shows everyday life, traditions and trades, for example a display of clothing from 1900 to 1950. Today the association Les Amis du Musée d’Escaudain staffs the museum during openings and organises exhibitions, Museum Night, Halloween and the European Heritage Days.
