About the museum

The local history museum is housed in the former prisons of the bailliage (historic administrative district) of Marchiennes, in a building whose entrance lies beneath the porch of the town hall. It presents a wealth of objects and documents on the history of the town and its region, spread over six rooms.

The circuit covers the rich abbey past of Marchiennes and many themes from prehistory to the early modern era: Gallo-Roman excavation finds, the siege of 1712, the massacres of 1793, the adventures of the Corbineau brothers, the industrial past with mining and glassmaking, trades and games of earlier times, and both World Wars. It also displays works by artists such as Loseleur, Labisse and Moral.

The relief model of the town as it was in 1791 and the dungeons are the two highlights of the visit. The museum is run by the association Les Amis de Marchiennes.
