About the museum

The Maison du Patrimoine Sourdin opened in April 2024 in the heart of Villedieu-les-Poêles, behind the town hall. It occupies a former secular youth hall, inaugurated in 1927, later used as a cinema and renovated for the purpose. According to a travel guide, it has taken over the collections and themes of the former Poëslerie museum and the Maison de la Dentellière.

Six scenographic and interactive spaces trace the town's history, from the first commandery of the Order of Malta to the present day. Archives, maps and old objects show how copper, dinanderie and lace built Villedieu's reputation for craftsmanship.

The route also devotes a section to Norman furniture, local woods and cabinetmaking tools. One space is dedicated to the Sienne, the river that played an important role in the town's development, and raises awareness of aquatic habitats and wild salmon. The last space presents contemporary heritage: local companies such as Chaudrolux, the Atelier du Cuivre or the Cornille-Havard foundry display one of their finest pieces. Upstairs, the lace school offers bobbin lace classes.
