Temporarily closed. The museum has been closed since 2015 for safety reasons, and the Logis du Roi is undergoing works ahead of the museum’s redeployment. The collections are kept at the Centre de conservation des musées de Granville. The Maison du Projet, open to all, presents the building and the ongoing works.

About the museum

The Musée d’art et d’histoire is the oldest of Granville’s museums. The town founded it in 1885, first in a room of the town hall in the Haute Ville. Successive donations enriched the collections, including a painting by Gustave Courbet, “Vue du lac Léman” (1876), formally attributed to the painter in 2017. In 1949 it became the Musée du Vieux Granville and focused on regional ethnography.

A major bequest in 1932 prompted the town to look for a new home: in 1934 it bought the Logis du Roi, a former military building in the Haute Ville, and the museum moved there two years later. Rooms of regional costumes were added in 1951, and spaces devoted to deep-sea fishing, shore fishing and sea bathing followed in 1983.

The museum has been closed since 2015 for safety reasons. Since then, the team has inventoried, restored and repacked the collections, which are now kept at the Centre de conservation des musées de Granville in the Halle au Blé. The plan to redeploy the museum in the Logis du Roi was approved in 2020, and the building was cleared in 2022 and 2023. The Maison du Projet, opened in 2022 in an outbuilding, informs the public about this work.
