About the museum
The museum is at the entrance to the Carrière des fusillés, route de Laval, where 27 hostages were shot by the Germans on October 22, 1941. The Amicale de Châteaubriant-Voves-Rouillé-Aincourt bought the La Sablière field in 1948, then other plots; the monument by sculptor Antoine Rohal was unveiled in 1950, and the site was listed in 1993. In 1986 the association acquired the neighboring farm.
In October 2001, with help from the Region, the farm was fitted out to host a historical and pictorial exhibition. The permanent museum opened in October 2006, with a reception area. It is now run and animated by the association Amis du Musée de la Résistance de Châteaubriant.
The route recalls the arrests of communists and trade unionists from 1940, their internment in hostage camps such as Châteaubriant, Voves, Rouillé and Aincourt, daily life and resistance in those camps, and the role of Spanish Republicans and young people. Other spaces present the Occupation and forms of resistance in the Châteaubriant area and the Nantes region, with thematic routes and documentary films. The museum holds temporary exhibitions, mainly on the theme of the Concours national de la Résistance et de la Déportation, and welcomes pupils, students and researchers.
