About the museum
The Musée de l'Abbaye occupies the vaulted cellars of the abbey palace of the Benedictine abbey of Saint-Michel, in the heart of Gaillac. It opened in 1997. The collections of art objects and folk traditions it presents were previously housed in the castle museum in the Foucaud park and, from 1972, in the Hôtel Pierre de Brens.
The route begins with archaeology: 13th-century capitals and a Gallo-Roman mosaic found during the restoration of the building tell the origins of the town. It then covers the port of Gaillac, which drove the city's growth, followed by a large gallery on vines and wine, with the tools of each stage of the work, from pruning to transporting the wine.
Other rooms present glass and pottery production, notably stamp-decorated salt mortars, a specialty of the Tarn valley, and a set of objects from the Compagnons du Devoir (sashes, masterpieces, prints and portraits). A final room brings together sacred art from the abbey and the churches of Gaillac, from medieval statuary to liturgical vestments. The neighboring abbey church is undergoing interior restoration, with completion announced for 2030.
