About the museum

The Lons-le-Saunier museum was founded in 1817 by the Société d’émulation du Jura. Its collections come largely from major gifts. It was first housed in a room of the prefecture, then moved in 1857 to a wing of the town hall, where it remains today.

Today only the fine arts section of this municipal museum is permanently on view. The first floor presents part of the 19th-century sculpture collection, notably works by Antoine Etex, François-Rupert Carabin, Max Claudet and Jean-Joseph Perraud. This Jura-born artist bequeathed to the museum the contents of his studio and his own art collection.

The second floor is devoted to paintings from the Northern, Italian and French schools, including works by Pieter Brueghel the Younger, Pietro della Vecchia, Nicolas Bernard Lépicié and Gustave Courbet. A space dedicated to the sculptor-cabinetmaker and patron Jean-Paul Mazaroz concludes the route. Two rooms host temporary exhibitions, which also rotate archaeology and natural history collections.
