About the museum

The Poligny museum grew out of the Société d'agriculture, sciences et arts de Poligny, founded on December 1, 1859, which wanted to create a library and a museum. The mayor issued the decree establishing the museum on August 7, 1860; the collections probably occupied a room in the town hall. They were built up almost exclusively through donations from the members of the society, who had to give an object to the library or the museum in order to be admitted.

The first curator, Ballandrin, was appointed in 1860. From 1873, with Edmond Sauria, the museum had an independent existence. Donations continued after 1901, when the society's bulletin ceased publication. Since 2004, the departmental heritage services of Jura have been studying the collections, and a digitization campaign in 2010, funded by the city, the DRAC and the Region, made it possible to present them online.

The rooms, with large wooden display cases, bring together natural history (including an important herbarium and dinosaur bones discovered during the construction of a railway line), exotic ethnology, archaeology, fine arts, architectural sculpture and numismatics.
