About the museum
The museum was born during the Revolution and the Empire, from property confiscated from the Church and from émigrés. After the Treaty of Lunéville, Bonaparte sent around thirty paintings to Nancy, and the Chaptal decree of September 1, 1801 allocated it a first set of 44 paintings.
The museum occupies an 18th-century pavilion on Place Stanislas, designed by Emmanuel Héré, architect to King Stanislas. The staircase is decorated with ironwork by Jean Lamour. A first extension was built in 1936 by Jacques and Michel André.
In 1999, the architect Laurent Beaudouin enlarged the museum, doubling its area. The new building added an auditorium, temporary exhibition rooms, a graphic arts cabinet, a documentation centre and a children’s workshop. In 2011, works directed by Luca Lotti created a new route, with a room devoted to the designer Jean Prouvé.
The collections cover European art from the late Middle Ages to the present, with Lorraine, Italian, Flemish, Dutch and French paintings, around 25,000 graphic works and a rich collection of 20th-century art. In the basement, remains of the city’s fortifications house more than 900 glass pieces from the Daum manufactory.
