About the museum

The Musée des Conscrits traces the history of the Conscrits festival from its origins to the present day, with photographs and objects from the various year groups. It is housed in the former Maison du patrimoine of Villefranche-sur-Saône, created in 1999 near the collegiate church of Notre-Dame-des-Marais.

Between 2000 and 2006, a permanent exhibition, the Musée de la Conscription, evoked two centuries of military conscription (1798–1998). An incident in December 2006 led to its removal and to the closure of the site for a year. The museum was then refocused on the festive traditions of the conscripts, in particular the festival of Villefranche-sur-Saône, without forgetting its origins in conscription.

The Maison du patrimoine is now the Maison des mémoires en Beaujolais. After works that began in 2023, it offers a continuous route from the first floor to the third floor, and the Musée des Conscrits keeps its place there. The site also houses the Pays d’art et d’histoire du Beaujolais.
