About the museum
In the 1980s, Jean Vaillant, the museum's founder and curator, was already displaying objects on the upper floor of today's town hall that showed how tools and everyday life had evolved. In 1988, a large retail development threatened the Lebrun farm, dated 1576; residents opposed it to preserve the village's heritage. The commune bought the farm in 1989, and the museum moved in in 1993. Jean Vaillant died on November 13, 2015.
The buildings date from 1576 for the house, 1737 for the stables and 1870 for the barn. A paved courtyard, a herb garden and a barn with its former farming equipment complete the visit.
The route runs from paleontology and prehistory to the present day: fossils, one of the richest prehistoric collections in the Avesnois, Gallic and Gallo-Roman remains, and the history of the lords of Bousies in the Marguerite de Constantinople room. It then covers everyday life and rural craftsmanship before tractors, a 1930s schoolroom, and the age of telecommunications, from the magic lantern to television sets of the 1950s.
