About the museum
From 1977 onward, enthusiasts began rescuing fire engines destined for scrapping. The 30-meter Delahaye ladder of 1939, threatened with the scrap heap, made it necessary to find a lasting home. The association that owns most of the collections was founded in 1984.
In 1990, the mayor of Montville, André Martin, proposed hosting the museum in his commune, and an architectural competition followed. The museum opened on May 29, 1993 and received the “Musée de France” label. The commune owns the building, of more than 2,500 m², designed to display large vehicles; the association owns the collections or holds them on deposit.
The museum traces more than three centuries of firefighting. It displays about 150 vehicles, including the oldest from 1916, more than 60 motor pumps from 1890 to 1970, and about thirty hand pumps from 1720 to 1913. It also shows uniforms, helmets, medals, books, posters, paintings, toys and decorative objects.
