About the museum
The idea for the museum emerged in 1988, when an exhibition at the Château des ducs de Bretagne in Nantes marked the centenary of the professional firefighters of Nantes. A uniform specialist showed part of his collection there. A small team of volunteer firefighters then decided to preserve this heritage and to create a link between the public and the firefighters of yesterday and today.
The Amicale of Nantes firefighters provided financial support from 1989, and the Association des Amis du Musée was founded in 1991. The SDIS 44 became a partner in 2002 and the City of Nantes in 2008. After touring exhibitions in several towns, the museum opened at 37 rue du Maréchal Joffre, near the Saint-Clément church, with an opening on November 9, 2006. In 2011, the historic fire station was once again made available to it.
The collection includes more than 4,000 items, acquired or donated, mainly uniforms and small equipment. The museum states that it is the only one in France to hold uniform items from every era, from the Ancien Régime to the present day. Volunteer guides, mostly firefighters, lead the guided tours.
