About the museum
The Château de Sceaux was built between 1856 and 1862 for the Duke and Duchess of Trévise, in brick and stone. In 1923 the Trévise family sold the estate to the Seine département, which later became the Hauts-de-Seine département.
The museum was founded in 1937. It was initially devoted to the history of Île-de-France. Today it mainly presents the successive owners of the estate and French taste from Louis XIV to Napoleon III, through paintings, drawings, prints, furniture and decorative objects.
After major work to improve accessibility and safety, the museum reopened in September 2020 with a new route. Each of the main rooms is devoted to one owner of the estate: Colbert, the Duke of Maine, Penthièvre and the Trévise family. The collections include nearly 15,000 works, among them paintings, sculptures, ceramics, books, photographs and posters.
