About the museum
The Centre Pompidou Francilien is an annex of the Centre Pompidou in Île-de-France, located in Massy in the Essonne department. The project responds to the lack of space in the current reserves of the Musée national d'art moderne, which are located north of Paris. It was prepared over five years with local stakeholders, and construction began in July 2024.
The 30,000 m² building, designed by the PCA-STREAM agency of Philippe Chiambaretta, combines a closed base that protects the works with upper levels open to the public. It is to house around 150,000 works, in about 13,000 m² of reserves and 4,000 m² of conservation and restoration workshops. Part of the site is devoted to creation: spaces allow artists to produce works and to work with the collection.
The project is carried out with the Region Île-de-France, the Essonne department, the Paris-Saclay urban community, the City of Massy and the State, in partnership with the Université Paris-Saclay for research in preventive conservation. The permanent opening is announced for spring 2027; before then, the public can discover the building during three free weekends in October and November 2026.
