About the museum

The Musée du Noyonnais was created following a donation by the heirs of Hélène Porgès in 1932. It received the Musée de France designation in 2003. It is housed in the former episcopal palace of Noyon, a building protected as a historic monument and located in the cathedral quarter.

The collections were enriched by a major donation from the Orientalist painter Joseph-Félix Bouchor, comprising more than 300 works, and by objects from archaeological excavations carried out in Noyon and the surrounding region. The museum was redesigned in 1996, and the ground floor received a new layout in 2019.

The route traces the formation and development of the town from the Gallo-Roman period onward. The first floor presents the archaeological collections and two rooms devoted to sculpted elements of the Notre-Dame cathedral. On the second floor, visitors discover rare furniture, including medieval chests from the cathedral treasury, a very rare medieval chess set and Bouchor’s paintings.
