About the museum

The museum’s collections come from the Pays Châtillonnais, the Société archéologique et historique du Châtillonnais, the museum’s friends’ association and many donors. They bring together objects discovered in the 20th century at sites in the region, notably from the Celtic and Gallo-Roman periods.

The discovery of the tomb of the Lady of Vix in 1953 gave the museum international fame. Her large bronze krater, now one of the museum’s best-known pieces, is the heart of the Vix Treasure.

In 2009 the museum moved into the buildings of the former Notre-Dame abbey, which made it possible to enlarge and renovate the exhibition spaces. The route runs from Prehistory to the early 20th century and includes rooms devoted to the Vix Treasure, the Celts and Gauls, the Gallo-Roman world, medieval and Renaissance art, Marshal Marmont and birds. The museum is run by the Communauté de Communes du Pays Châtillonnais.
