About the museum
The piano museum grew out of a project by the Association française des facteurs et accordeurs de pianos, founded in 1964, which wanted to gather and display instruments that bear witness to the craftsmanship of the profession. In the early 2000s, the town of Limoux proposed installing the collection in the Saint-Jacques church, the former church of a 14th-century Dominican convent. The museum opened in 2002.
Over the years, the collection was built up almost entirely through donations from professionals (about 80%) and private individuals. The piano maker and tuner Jean-Jacques Trinques played an important role in restoring the instruments. The collection belongs to EuroPiano France.
It includes about a hundred rare pieces that illustrate piano making in the 19th and 20th centuries, with pianos from well-known brands as well as from less famous makers. It also includes learning instruments, a reconstruction of a piano maker’s workshop, and toys. Since 2009, an auditorium with 170 seats, set up in the choir of the church, has hosted concerts.
