About the museum

The site of Tauroentum was already known in the time of Louis XIV, who sent a surveyor to draw up a plan. Larger excavations began in the 1920s under Antoine Charras, and the site was listed as a historic monument on January 15, 1926. The following year the Friends of the Tauroentum Museum association was founded, with the aim of building a museum on site. It was not until 1966 that it opened to the public.

The museum is built on the remains of a large Roman seaside villa, occupied from the 1st century. It comprises three rooms decorated with mosaics and displays objects found on site: amphorae, coins, glassware, and a remarkable group of burial forms, including a tomb covered with tegulae, a house-shaped tomb, a funerary urn and a votive altar.

According to legend, the Greek city of Tauroentum, swallowed up by the waves, was located on this spot. Since 2022 the museum has undergone major renovation: fitting out the reception building, consolidation and restoration of part of the remains, and enhancement of the surroundings, the pedestrian footbridge and the open-air theater.
