About the museum

The museum is located on Place Baragnon, in the heart of the village, in a former presbytery dating from the early 18th century. It was founded in 1910 thanks to two Marseille painters, Marius and Eugénie Guindon, who gave Cassis a collection of 47 canvases by Provençal masters. It holds the “Musée de France” label.

The archaeology section displays pottery, amphorae, jewelry and coins found during excavations at Cassis, from the Celto-Ligurian period to the early Middle Ages. It was enhanced in 2010 with finds from underwater excavations lent by the DRASSM, from wrecks near Cassis. The fine arts section includes the Guindon collection (Ziem, Audibert, Seyssaud and other 19th- and 20th-century painters) and 46 portraits of the benefactors of the Cassis hospice, which are listed as historic monuments. The ethnography section brings together Provençal costumes, fishing tools and ship models.
