About the museum
The sculptor Henri Chapu was born in 1833 in Le Mée-sur-Seine, on an estate in the park that now bears his name. A winner of the Grand Prix de Rome for sculpture in 1855, he built a career recognised across Europe, became president of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1889 and has been buried in Le Mée-sur-Seine since 1891.
The town built the museum in 1976 on land donated by the family that owned the artist's birthplace, and inaugurated it on February 19, 1977. It houses the works that the sculptor had entrusted to his birth town during his lifetime.
The collections include a large number of original plasters, drawings, bronzes and marbles. The municipality has enriched them through the acquisition of drawings and works and through the creation of a photographic archive, and it lends sculptures to national and international exhibitions.
