About the museum
The Musée Jean de La Fontaine is located in Château-Thierry, in the house where the poet and fabulist was born. For nearly 150 years it has paid tribute to the writer and his work, and the town presents it as a major place of remembrance of La Fontaine.
After four years of restoration and modernisation, the museum reopened on January 15, 2026 with an inauguration ceremony, and to the public the following day. The works restored the historic architecture of the house while preserving its character, and created a new visitor route.
The route combines heritage, literature and contemporary experience, with interactive displays, restored works, audio narratives and visual projections. The collections include paintings, prints and sculptures from the 17th to the 20th century, for example a portrait of the poet by Hyacinthe Rigaud from around 1690, Aubusson armchairs decorated with scenes from the Fables, and a statue by Bernard-Gabriel Seurre on long-term loan from the Château de Versailles.
