About the museum
The Musée Jean-Honoré Fragonard opened in 2011 in the old town of Grasse, in the Hôtel de Villeneuve. It pays tribute to the painter Jean-Honoré Fragonard (1732–1806), born in Grasse, son of a glove maker and perfumer, and to Jean-François Costa, who patiently gathered his works. The museum, presented as the Hélène and Jean-François Costa Collection, is run by Fragonard Parfumeur, a family business founded in Grasse in 1926.
Spread over three floors, the display gives an overview of the painter’s career: gallant scenes, religious painting, landscapes and fanciful portraits, leading up to The Sacrifice of the Rose, a painting from late in his life. On the second floor, the permanent exhibition brings together around twenty major works by Fragonard and some forty paintings by two other artists from Grasse: Marguerite Gérard, the painter’s sister-in-law and pupil, and Jean-Baptiste Mallet.
The first floor and garden level host temporary exhibitions every year, organized by the collector’s daughters, Agnès and Françoise Costa.
