About the museum

The Mainssieux Museum was founded in 1989. It presents the studio holdings of the painter Lucien Mainssieux and the collection of works he assembled throughout his life, mainly paintings from the 19th and 20th centuries. On his death in 1958, the artist named the city of Voiron as his universal legatee.

Lucien Mainssieux was born in Voiron in 1885. He began his career as a painter in Paris in 1905, after training with François-Joseph Girot and Jules Flandrin, and frequented avant-garde circles. A great traveller, he journeyed through France, Italy and above all North Africa, which left its mark on his painting. He remained attached to the Dauphiné and to Voiron, to which he regularly returned, and kept throughout his life the independence of a free artist.

The museum holds more than 1,000 paintings, 6,000 drawings, illustrated books, personal objects and the painter’s complete archives. The diversity of the collection is its strength: works by Courbet, Corot, Daubigny, Dinet, Ravier and Jacqueline Marval, among others, can be seen. The museum also organises temporary exhibitions to showcase its holdings.
