About the museum

A first attempt to create a museum in Étampes dates from 1795, but the project did not last, and the idea resurfaced around 1850. The museum was finally born in 1875, when the town council accepted the gift of the widow of the sculptor Élias Robert, born in Étampes in 1819, who had kept the works left in her husband's studio. A few archaeological and local history objects complemented the first collections, which were open to the public from September 26, 1875.

The museum owes its reputation to a group of 19th-century sculptures. Its collections now cover palaeontology (around 600 Stampian fossils), archaeology (nearly 3,000 prehistoric objects, the Gallo-Roman necropolis of Chantambre and finds from the excavations of the Capetian palace), fine arts (260 paintings, 358 sculptures, more than 900 graphic works), contemporary art and ethnology.

Since 2005 the museum has been intercommunal and offers educational projects with schools and lycées (upper secondary schools).
