About the museum

Pierre Corneille was born on June 6, 1606, in this house on Rue de la Pie, in the centre of Rouen, and lived there for almost half a century. His grandfather had bought it in 1584. The family home consisted of two adjoining houses, which Pierre and his brother Thomas inherited on their father’s death in 1639.

The inner garden and the “grande maison” have disappeared. Corneille sold the “petite maison”, the house visited today, a few months before his death in Paris in 1683.

The route presents a reconstruction of his study, furniture, 17th-century paintings and a model of the Vieux-Marché square. Since January 1, 2021, the house has belonged to the Réunion des Musées Métropolitains Rouen Normandie, which already managed the Maison des Champs de Corneille in Petit-Couronne. Together, the two sites form the literary hub of the network along with the Musée Flaubert and the Pavillon de Croisset.
